Wouter van Solinge


Wouter van Solinge (1962), is professor of Laboratory Medicine (since 2003) and Head of the Department of Clinical Chemistry and Haematology (since 2002) at the University Medical Center in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The last 9 years he was also Chairman and Medical Director of the Division of Laboratories and Pharmacy. In addition, he is member and chairman of several committees in and outside the hospital. He studied Pharmaceutical Sciences at Utrecht University and moved after his studies to Copenhagen, Denmark for four years to work on his thesis, which he defended in Utrecht in March 1993. He was a resident in clinical chemistry from 1993 – 1997 at the Meander Medical Center in Amersfoort and a registered clinical chemist starting february 1997. He worked as a staff member both at the Meander Medical Center and the University Medical Center St Radboud in Nijmegen, before moving to the UMC Utrecht in September 1998. In 2004 he started the Utrecht Patient Oriented Database (UPOD), a relational database containing all data on patients treated at the UMC Utrecht, including the “Hematology Database” with  all raw data on cells an cell-like components in the peripheral blood of these patients. This unique data set is fundamental for translational research and treatment of patients, using data and data analytics in healthcare.
Since January 2015 he is the Ambassador eHealth & Big Data of the UMC Utrecht. He advises the Board of Directors on the development, strategy and role of eHealth solutions and the application of data analytics for the UMC Utrecht and her partners, as well as implementing these solutions into clinical care.
